In the introduction to Man Was Not Born to Cry, Joel says, “’The purpose of man is to show forth the nature of God. Man is the great glory of God. Man was not meant to cry, and all his tears are shed only because of a sense of limitation. Man was not born to cry!” With that thought-provoking statement, Joel takes us on a journey that reveals the way to rise above this sense of limitation. ‘You know you have a body, and you know you have a mind, but you have not come to know the You that has the body and the mind. This is the You that is the adventure of life, and the adventure of life is the awakening of this You.’”
While Joel reveals the immense possibilities available to the sincere student, he also sets forth the spiritual principles and practices – the practical steps – that lead to this liberation from the sense of limitation. Through them, we learn to move beyond a human, personal sense of life and awaken to spiritual consciousness, where we live in glorious freedom under Grace.
He emphasizes that this transformation in consciousness requires commitment, dedication, and continual practice of the principles: “When we come to the place of praying without ceasing, abiding in the Word and letting the Word abide in us, dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, living and moving and having our being in the consciousness of truth,” Joel says, “then we can look forward to harmony.”
Man Was Not Born to Cry is the collection of the 1962 Infinite Way Letters. Joel regarded the monthly Letters as “among the most valuable things that we have.” He said,
As we work with this book, we can follow Joel’s direction and approach each chapter as a lesson in spiritual living—one to be embodied in our daily experience. Rather than leaving these lessons in the book as beautiful words merely to be enjoyed, we can practice them, apply them, put them to the test, and seek to prove the principles for ourselves. In this way, we make the message of The Infinite Way practical in our own lives.

The book can also be purchased through local bookstores by request.
For each chapter in Man Was Not Born to Cry, we will hear one recording that was used as source material for that chapter. If a chapter has more than one source recording, we may post a second recording for optional listening.
After we hear a recording for the first time, we will post it in the Study Center and on the telephone recordings line for the duration of the study program and for four weeks after the program concludes. This enables students to access all recordings used for the program, regardless of when they begin to participate. We are most grateful to Sue Ropac, on behalf of the Estate of Joel S. Goldsmith, for permission to post these copyrighted recordings.
